Learn how to engage, support, and mentor your employees. Learn to look after your people, before it's too late. They just aren't going to take abuse, and they don't care that you had to take it when you were younger. Who aren't going to put up with toxic working environments and assh*le bosses.Īnd they're not incompetent or lazy either. It's happening whether you like it or not.Ī new generation who knows what they want and refuse to compromise. I can already hear cynical comments about a "strawberry generation" and how young people aren't willing to pay the same dues the older generation had to in order to make it in the corporate world. No "I'll see if things get better" or "I'm sure I'll get used to it". So they quit, and went looking elsewhere. And if this was what they got in their first week, there was no way it was going to get any better. Their logic was, in those first 5 days, they weren't given the respect, guidance, or support they felt was needed to succeed in the role. Why did they quit? Because of their immediate superior. He had just hired someone, new to the workforce, who admitted they had only been at their previous company (a reputable one) before quitting. A recent conversation with a friend shed some light on the state of retaining and engaging the next generation entering the workforce.
